My Erasmus Experience in Turin – Unai Reyes

Trip to Turin

On the departure day we arrived in Italy at noon and after reaching the meeting point. There one of our coordinators was waiting for us, who gave us the hotel room keys and took us to the city center for a quick tour. Afterwards, we took the bus back to the hotel and rested because the next day we started our internship.

Impressions of the country

Italy is a very beautiful and interesting country, they have slightly different schedules than in Spain, but it's easy to adapt because the culture is practically identical to the Spanish one. The language was a bit challenging since not everyone speaks English and I don't speak Italian, but with a translator and a few key words, there was no problem.

Trips

One city I visited apart from Turin was Milan, another very beautiful city, especially the Duomo which is the fourth largest cathedral in the world. We also visited Fablab Torino, a digital manufacturing lab that belongs to ToolBox, a hybrid space where freelancers, companies, and startups work together.

Internship

At Engim Torino, we carried out various tasks needed to improve the school’s "ecosystem" or solve issues faced by the staff, such as problems with screen adapters, fixing and preparing laptops, or repairing their equipment. In the workshop, where we spent most of our time, we prepared computers according to their specifications, like dual-booting Windows and Ubuntu, installing necessary apps, antivirus software, and monitoring tools. We also repaired both hardware and software on laptops and desktop computers. Additionally, we configured VLANs, installed and configured access points, and worked with switch settings. We learned to install packages on multiple machines simultaneously over a network to save time, and we used tools like Clonezilla. Lastly, once a week, students from other schools came to a computer repair workshop called Artigianelli where we discussed and shared ideas while learning to fix different devices.

The company

I had previously worked fixing computers and assisting customers at PcBox, and honestly, I wasn’t disappointed at all working in a school where the work done and the treatment from the staff—especially Antonio and Michele, our supervisors—was excellent.
